KINGDOM BUSINESS

How do we view business and faith in North America? Do they have competing agendas or do they fulfill God’s purpose together? In Burundi, there is a delicate relationship between business leaders and church leaders. Both sides have felt the sting of harmful experiences and fabricated stereotypes. Both sides approach one another with caution. As a result, there is a standoff. Expectations and motives are viewed through the lens of skepticism. Which side will change and prove to be a trustworthy partner? There is a movement in Bujumbura to bring the two sides together through biblical understanding, reconciliation, and vision. This relationship is receiving fresh air.

As part of this movement, 8 small business dreamers participated in a development course focused on Kingdom business. Some of these participants were already doing business and some were looking to cultivate an idea. The 9-week course (licensed through Sinapis) covered topics such as discover your calling, know your customer, understand the market, manage your finances, and ethics. Each week the participants discussed these business topics along with related scriptures. In Burundi, an open discussion in this setting is viewed cautiously for fear someone will steal your idea. Property rights and trademarks are a missing component of this business environment and it is difficult to enforce your rights for your ideas. At first, the conversation was guarded, but after a few weeks the discussion was more active. Participants learned to trust their peers, to engage in feedback and share their experiences. Many of them commented the interaction with their peers was the best part of the course.

We want to see more business leaders encouraged in their gifting. We want to continue to offer courses that will bring leaders together to learn from one anther in Kingdom business.

Pray for these business leaders as they grow their business and live out the teachings of the Bible.

Pray for church leaders as they embrace the giftings of business leaders and how to impact the Kingdom.

Pray for future opportunities to further this budding relationship between business and faith.

For more on this topic, I enjoyed the book “Why Business Matters to God” by Jeff Van Duzer. Van Duzer describes the purpose of Kingdom business,

“Business must concern itself with redemptive as well as creative work.”

“The purpose is still to serve in two key respects: 1) to serve the community by providing goods and services that will enable the community to flourish, and 2) to serve employees by providing them with opportunities to express at least a portion of their God-given identity through meaningful and creative work.”

BETTER WAY

Toni NDIKURIYO is a logistics coordinator at a local Christian organization in Burundi. This organization ministers to marginalized people in five sites throughout the country. Outside of her full-time job, Toni uses her gifts in food preparation to operate a catering business. She offers clients simple refreshments for groups as small as 15 people to full event meals for groups as large as 300 people. It is a lot of work, but Toni is passionate about helping her clients celebrate life’s events with refreshments and good food.

Toni recently participated in a 9-week teaching course called Aspire (see my previous post from Novembe r 2020). The course is designed for idea stage and early stage entrepreneurs who seek to build a scalable business model while integrating their faith into the business. “I really enjoyed my time in the Aspire course, especially meeting new people. As fellow entrepreneurs we spoke the same language and we could challenge and share with one another.”

Toni has seen an increase in referrals for her business and she believes it is through these Aspire alumni connections. “A large organization contacted me to cater an event. I do not know how they heard about my business, but I believe it was through the Aspire network [in Burundi].” This opportunity challenged Toni on how to advertise her catering business. “Today, I ask my clients for feedback on the services I provided, and I adjust accordingly. I wish to maintain the relationship. I want my clients to be heard and hopefully they will recommend me to other businesses.”

The Aspire course helped Toni to see how God uses business to further His Kingdom. “Personally, I used to think business was for others. How can Christians maintain integrity in business? But I realized we reflect His character in how we operate our business and ultimately, we are a witness for Him. His leading can guide us into a better way of doing business.”

IMPACT

I recently had the opportunity to travel and meet several entrepreneurs in Kenya. These weren’t just any ole motivated, hard-working, focused, inventive individuals, these were Kingdom-minded entrepreneurs. Through some intensive coursework these leaders were inspired to grow (and in some cases, start) their business and at the same time bring ministry to their workplace. And to a person they said it was transformational; for their own spiritual growth and the growth of their employees.

Gayle (not her real name) started a business designing, manufacturing, and selling handbags. She meets daily with her staff to share a morning devotional. They follow the Discovery Bible Study method (read about it here). Not all of her employees are Christians, but she prays for transformation. One employee has already made a commitment to Christ. Hallelujah!!

Jeff (not his real name) partnered with a friend to start a business which trains and outsources house staff (nannies, gardeners, cooks). At the training facility every meeting starts with prayer. It’s a simple step, but an intentional one. The trained workers are also given training in how to share their faith with the clients they serve.

There are similar stories from all over the world. These everyday folks have a passion to grow their business and impact lives for the Kingdom. Even with all the pressure and all the hard-work ahead, they are choosing to embrace their role, wherever they are, and be ‘on mission.’

Their examples got me to thinking:

How can I intentionally impact those around me with the message of Jesus?
Do I see ALL parts of my life as ministry?
When did I start to separate my secular and spiritual lives? Better yet, why?
